The Origins of the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools

The first, formal meeting of CCMS as a statutory body was in 1990.

The origins of CCMS stem from the recommendation of Professor Aston in his report for the Department of Education in the late 1970s to create 'an upper tier of management’ for the Catholic maintained sector.

Following collaboration between the Department and Northern Bishops it was agreed that a single management body should be established to support five Diocesan Education Committees.
