Five Catholic Maintained schools have been included in the Ministers latest announcement that four new build major works projects and nine school enhancement projects will progress to construction stage.

St Malachy’s Primary School, Armagh is on the list of four schools comprising the new build major works projects. The primary school is currently operating from temporary accommodation in what was previously St Brigid's College, Armagh.

Delivery of each project will be spread across a number of years as delivery of the projects progresses on site.

A further four Catholic Maintained schools will move to the construction phase on school enhancement projects.

These are:

  • Chapel Road Primary School, Derry
  • Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School, Belfast
  • St Bride’s Primary School, Belfast
  • St Mary’s Primary School, Newtownbutler

The school enhancement projects address immediate and pressing need through smaller‑scale refurbishment or extension works.

Eamonn Broderick, Chief Executive of the Council for Catholic Maintained Schools (CCMS) said: “Both the new build major works project and the school enhancement projects announced will bring much needed investment to five Catholic Maintained schools across Northern Ireland. The condition and maintenance of the school estate generally is of fundamental importance for children and young people in our schools, for the staff who work there and for the communities they serve. CCMS will continue to advocate on behalf of Catholic Maintained schools experiencing accommodation pressures due to age, condition, suitability and capacity, as well as schools facing acute building condition issues.”

Paul Givan said: “Many of these projects have been in planning for a significant number of years, serving schools that are in exceptionally poor condition that have seen little or no investment and now urgently require replacement buildings. Whilst I continue to work to secure a Capital Budget settlement that can deliver the investment required for our school estate, it is clear that these schemes cannot continue to be held back.”
